South, on the slope toward the river, is the National Museum of Ancient Art, the national collection of painting and sculpture. Further east rise the headline draws of central Lisbon, the hilltop Castle of Saint George and the Chiado Museum, a short tram ride off.
What is the history of Campo de Ourique?
Campo de Ourique grew in the nineteenth century, as Lisbon expanded inland from its old riverside core onto the plateau above. Surveyors laid the streets on a regular grid, a pattern that sets the quarter apart from the tangled lanes of the historic centre. For most of its life it was a residential district for the city, not a destination for outsiders.
Its parish boundaries are recent. The freguesia of Campo de Ourique was drawn in 2012, when Lisbon merged and redrew its administrative map.
Where is Campo de Ourique?
The parish occupies a hilltop between Lisbon's centre and the river, bounded by Estrela to the east and south, Alcântara to the west, and Campolide to the north. It sits well inland from the Tagus, on high ground above the western slopes. A tight grid makes it walkable.
