Nearby at Studenica the founder of the royal house built a white marble abbey that became the holiest of the Serbian monasteries, and castles like Maglič guarded the gorge of the Ibar. The town took the name of kings. Long a market at the river mouth, the town was named Kraljevo, the king's town, for the crownings at Žiča, and it grew as the market and road town of the valley.
Wars passed through the valley. Through Ottoman rule and later wars the monasteries and the town endured, and Kraljevo grew into a busy city of central Serbia, keeping its abbeys, its castle, and its royal name. The old churches still stand.
