What is the history of Novi Pazar?
This valley was the cradle of Serbia. On the hills nearby stood Ras, the seat of the first Serbian kings, and around it rose the great monasteries of the Nemanjić line, among them Đurđevi Stupovi and the ancient Church of Saint Apostles Peter and Paul. Kings were crowned in these hills.
When the Ottomans conquered the Balkans, they founded a new market town in the valley below, and Novi Pazar, the New Bazaar, grew into a busy crossroads of trade. For centuries the town looked to Istanbul. Mosques like the Altun-Alem Mosque rose among the bazaars, a fortress guarded the roads, and a Muslim Slavic culture took root that still marks the Sandžak.
Empires came and went around it. The Ottomans withdrew and Serbia took the town, and through every change the old churches and mosques stood side by side. The ruins of Ras and its monasteries were named a treasure of the world.
Novi Pazar still joins the Christian and the Muslim past in one valley.

Novi Pazar lies in the hills of the southwest. The town sits in a narrow mountain valley in the Raška region of southwestern Serbia, where the Raška river runs down through the highlands. Green slopes rise close on every side.
