What is the history of Hsinchu?
Hsinchu began as a frontier settlement. Han Chinese settlers pushed into the plains of the Taokas people in the eighteenth century and built a walled town they called Bamboo Fort, guarding the northwest coast. Walls and gates rose around it.
The great East Gate still stands from those days, and temples to the city god and to Confucius kept the old faith at the town's heart. The modern age turned the town to glass and silicon. Rich deposits of sand and gas made Hsinchu a centre of glassmaking, remembered at the Glass Museum, and then, late in the twentieth century, the government built a vast science park on the edge of the city.
Chips changed everything. The world's greatest makers of semiconductors gathered there, and Hsinchu became the beating heart of Taiwan's technology, its universities and labs drawing engineers from across the island. The old gate still guards the modern city.

Hsinchu sits on a windy coastal plain. The city spreads between the Taiwan Strait and the green hills of the interior in the northwest of the island, where sea winds sweep hard across the flats. Open to the west, the coast takes the full force of the sea.

Hsinchu lies on the busy west coast of Taiwan. High-speed and regular trains stop in the city between Taipei and the south, and the freeways run past toward both, an easy hour from the capital. Buses serve the science park and the hills.
