What is the history of Chiayi City?
Chiayi grew as a timber town under Japanese rule. When Japan governed Taiwan, it built a railway up into the Alishan mountains to bring down the great cypress trees, and Chiayi became the mill town where the timber was cut and shipped, laying out parks, a shrine, and wide streets. Baseball made the town famous.
A team from a Chiayi school reached the final of the great tournament in Japan in the nineteen-thirties, a story still told with pride. Then a dark day marked the city. Chiayi was a centre of the unrest of 1947, when a rising against the government was put down with bloodshed, remembered now in a peace park and a monument.
The town rebuilt and grew. It spread across the plain as a market and railway city, keeping its old wooden houses and its mountain line, and travellers still come to ride the train to Alishan. The old park keeps its shrine and tower.
