What is the history of Douliu?
Douliu grew as a market on the plain. Settlers from the mainland cleared the farmland of central Taiwan and gathered to trade at Douliu, and the town rose as the market and later the seat of the Yunlin country. The Japanese left their mark.
Under their rule the town gained a railway, wooden offices, and a story house, some of which still stand among the newer streets. The plain became a land of puppets. In the villages of Yunlin the art of the glove puppet, the budaixi, grew into a great folk theatre, with carved figures, music, and painted stages, and Douliu became a centre of the craft.
Soy and honey came from the fields around. The farms of the county made soy sauce, honey, and rice for the island, and the town traded in the fruits of the plain. The old story house still stands in the town.

Where is Douliu?
Douliu lies on the Chianan plain of central Taiwan, in Yunlin County. The town sits on the flat rice land between the mountains and the sea, where the hills of the interior fall to the western plain, on the Zhuoshui river's basin. Green fields ring the town.

Warmth and humidity shape the subtropical weather over Douliu. Hot, wet summers and mild winters cross the plain, and the summer brings rains and the odd typhoon off the sea, while the winters stay soft and dry. Sea winds cross the fields in autumn.

How do you get to Douliu?
Douliu lies on the plain of central Taiwan, on the main west-coast line. Trains run to it up and down the island between Taipei and Kaohsiung, and roads cross the plain to the coast and the mountains. Buses reach the county towns around.
