The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
South Yuanlin Station fixes one end. A room in the streets north of it puts the centre of Yuanlin, Chengmei Hall and the town's ordinary eating and shopping within a walk, which is what a rail arrival wants and what a car makes irrelevant. Central Yuanlin is the safe pick.
The craft side is the other pull, since the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute and its Craft Exhibition Hall are what bring most outside visitors to Yuanlin rather than to any other town of Changhua County. A bed near the institute shortens that. It also puts the Kuang-Hwei Educational Memorial Hall and the Tiantoushui History Museum on a manageable afternoon.
Changhua City is the fallback, and a fair one, because the county seat carries the range of rooms that a second-ranked town does not and leaves Yuanlin as a day out instead of a base. Luocuo Church stays on the list either way. It suits you if craft is the reason for the detour, and if the difference between a county seat and the county's second city is not the thing you are travelling for.
