The landmark here is the plan itself. Brightmoor was laid out as a self-contained worker suburb in 1922, and its grid of small single-family lots on the northwest side of Detroit remains the thing to read on the ground. There is no cathedral, no tower.
Many of its modest frame houses have not lasted: some fell apart, others gave way to vacant lots, and urban gardens have been set out among them.
What is the history of Brightmoor?
Brightmoor dates to 1922. It was platted as a working-class subdivision on the northwest edge of Detroit during the boom that pulled tens of thousands of assembly workers into Michigan, and the developer sold small lots and cheap frame houses to families arriving for factory pay. The neighbourhood was folded into Detroit soon after.
Its fortunes have tracked the city ever since.
