What are the main landmarks in Indian Village?
The Frederick K. Stearns House anchors the district's southern edge on East Jefferson Avenue. It was commissioned in 1902. The Joseph Campau House stands among the same ranks of Albert Kahn and Louis Kamper mansions that made Indian Village famous, while St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church raises its towers a short way west.
Belle Isle carries the rest. The island holds the Belle Isle Aquarium, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the Detroit Yacht Club, and Mack Park once sat off Mack Avenue.
What is the history of Indian Village?
Detroit's automobile and industrial fortunes built these streets. The money came fast. Prominent citizens hired architects such as Albert Kahn, Louis Kamper and William B. Stratton to raise the mansions of Seminole, Iroquois and Burns during the early years of the 1900s, and Edsel Ford was among the owners.
The district earned protection early. Indian Village joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, guarding the whole enclave of grand east-side houses.
