About Corktown Historic District

What are the main landmarks in Corktown Historic District?

Most Holy Trinity Church anchors the district. Its spire rises near Porter Street and marks the parish that grew with the neighbourhood's earliest settlers, a red-brick landmark that has watched Corktown outlast every other quarter in Detroit. The old street grid itself is the draw here, its low houses framed by I-75 to the north and Rosa Parks Boulevard to the west.

That listed fabric earned Corktown its place on the National Register of Historic Places. Small and old still hold the ground.

What is the history of Corktown Historic District?

Corktown is the oldest extant neighbourhood in Detroit. Its low houses and the parish of Most Holy Trinity Church have stood while newer districts rose and fell across the wider city, giving the quarter between Bagley and Porter streets a continuity that little else in Michigan can match. The old fabric drew formal recognition.

In 1978 the district was entered on the National Register of Historic Places, fixing its boundaries and protecting the settler-era streets that survive.

Where is Corktown Historic District?

Corktown lies west of central Detroit. This compact Michigan quarter is hemmed by the I-75 freeway to the north and by Rosa Parks Boulevard along its western edge.
