Where to stay in Delray

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Delray holds almost no beds of its own. As a working-class industrial quarter on Detroit's south-western edge, it sends visitors toward downtown Detroit for hotels, keeping the neighbourhood itself a place of factories, rail yards, and the quiet streets around Most Holy Redeemer Church and Fort Wayne. Base yourself in central Detroit.

About Delray

What are the main landmarks in Delray?

Delray keeps a handful of landmarks in a small compass. Most Holy Redeemer Church rises over the neighbourhood, Burns Park gives it green ground, and the Fort Wayne Mound Site preserves an ancient burial place beside the older military post of Fort Wayne. The church tower is the marker.

Around these sit the rail lines and factory blocks that gave this south-western corner of Detroit its long industrial character.

What is the history of Delray?

Delray took shape long before it joined Detroit. Founded in 1836 as a separate settlement, the community grew up around the river works and the ground near Fort Wayne, then filled with immigrant parishes that built Most Holy Redeemer Church before the whole quarter was absorbed into the expanding city. Industry pulled the people in.

Factories and rail yards spread across the flats, and Delray became one of the most heavily industrial districts of south-western Detroit.

Where is Delray?

Delray lies on the south-western side of Detroit, a low riverside flat of industry set apart from the city centre by rail and factory land, with Fort Wayne guarding the water at its edge and Burns Park breaking the built ground. The river frames it. Downtown Detroit stands off to the north-east.
