Lafayette Park grew from the cleared ground of Detroit's near east side. Older Detroit surrounds it. Mariners' Church and St. Joseph Shrine, Detroit had already served the riverfront quarter for generations when the district's new blocks and townhouses were laid out across the open superblock.
The church spires stayed. Around them the planned streets took shape, a quiet counterpoint to the dense parish city that the Statue of Alexander Macomb still commemorates a few blocks west.
