About Mexicantown
What are the main landmarks in Mexicantown?
Murals and hand-painted signs brighten Bagley and Vernor. The Detroit Public Library's Bowen Branch opened on 28 December 1912. It is named after Herbert Bowen of the Detroit Library Commission.
In December 2012 Ford Motor Company announced the Ford Resource and Engagement Center in the Mexicantown Mercado, a building that had stood closed.
What is the history of Mexicantown?
Detroit's Mexican community settled along Vernor Street, and the area was first known as La Bagley. Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church held weekly masses in Spanish by 1969. The Lithuanian Hall became the Hispanos Unidos Hall.
Immigration in the 1970s and 1980s added to the community, a public relations campaign named the neighbourhood Mexicantown in the late 1980s, and a wave from Mexico in the 1990s greatly increased its numbers.
Where is Mexicantown?
Mexicantown lies in the south-west of Detroit, and its main streets are Bagley Street and Vernor Street. Its borders are loose. Some say it runs from the old train station to Clark Park, others insist it takes in Clark Park, and some stretch it as far as Livernois or Springwells Avenue.
