What are the main landmarks in Cass Corridor?
The museums anchor the north end. The Detroit Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, and the Michigan Science Center stand within a few blocks of one another along the Cultural Center. Faith left its mark on the streets between.
New Bethel Baptist Church, where the Reverend Franklin once preached, and Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church still hold their corners among the rowhouses. Older architecture survives too. What is the history of Cass Corridor?
It began as a wealthy Detroit address. Grand houses like the Ransom Gillis House and the Elisha Taylor House rose along Cass Avenue in the Gilded Age, and congregations built the stone churches, First Presbyterian Church and Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church among them, that still line the street. Decline followed.
Through the later twentieth century the corridor became a byword for hard times in Detroit, its rowhouses subdivided and emptied. Then came the arena. The building of Little Caesars Arena and the museum-led revival of the Cultural Center pulled money back toward Cass Avenue after decades of retreat.
