Where to stay in Linwood

Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.

Linwood keeps almost no lodging of its own, so the working choice is whether to sleep uphill in Mount Lookout or west along the river through Columbia-Tusculum and the East End. Eastern Avenue carries US Route 50 straight through, which puts downtown Cincinnati within a short drive. Lunken Airport sets the tone.

Stay here if you want the Ohio River Trail, the airport perimeter path and the Little Miami Scenic Trail starting at the door.

About Linwood

What are the main landmarks in Linwood?

The flat ground south of Beechmont Avenue belongs to Lunken Airport, which opened in 1925, served as Cincinnati's main airfield until 1947 and earned the nickname Sunken Lunken after repeated flooding. The 1937 Ohio River flood covered the field to the third floor of its control tower. Eshelby Lunken gave the field its name.

Older Linwood survives in fragments. A firehouse still stands at 3678 Heekin Avenue, and the village town hall serves as the Ark by the River Church.

What is the history of Linwood?

Linwood was incorporated as a village in 1874, out of Spencer Township, and grew around the Little Miami Railroad, whose main classification yard sat at Undercliff inside the neighborhood. Cincinnati took it in the 1890s. A ham factory, an auger works, a lumberyard and a hotel raised in 1865 at 4632 Eastern Avenue served the village.

Columbia Parkway and the rail embankments later cut the place into pieces. Eastern Avenue's business district never fully returned.

Where is Linwood?

The Little Miami River closes Linwood on the east and south, the Ohio River flats carry Lunken Airport, and wooded hillsides rise toward Mount Lookout.
