Northside keeps almost no rooms of its own, so the bed goes downtown and the neighborhood becomes an evening out. Book in Over-the-Rhine or Downtown Cincinnati. Then ride north on Hamilton Avenue to Knowlton's Corner, where the storefronts of the business district still stand shoulder to shoulder above their own upper-floor apartments.
The Farmers Hotel of 1859 survives on Hoffner Street as a protected landmark, not a place to sleep. You come for the shops on Hamilton Avenue and the trails at Parkers Woods.

What are the main landmarks in Northside?
The Hoffner Historic District lines Hamilton Avenue in Northside, a dozen buildings listed in 1978 and little altered since the 1890s. Hoffner Lodge holds the corner. Six small houses stand behind it on Moline Court.
The Domhoff Buildings went up in 1893 where Hamilton Avenue crosses Chase Avenue, four brick stories with shops below and apartments above. Samuel Hannaford drew two more on Chase Avenue: the Northside United Methodist Church of 1892 in rough stone, and the Miller House of 1890 under battlements. The American Can Company Building, five concrete stories of 1921, turned out can-making machines until 1963.
What is the history of Northside?
Northside grew up as Cumminsville, a settlement named for the early landowner David Cummins that filled out after the Miami and Erie Canal arrived in the 1820s. Jacob Hoffner bought both halves of the ground in 1836 and held them until his death in 1891. The estate was subdivided at once.
Cincinnati annexed Cumminsville in 1873, and Knowlton's Corner became one of the busiest commercial corners in the city through the 1920s. Industry had gone by the 1960s, and in 1974 the new I-74 cut the old village into North Cumminsville and South Cumminsville. By the 1980s the northern half answered to Northside.
Where is Northside?
Northside lies west of Mill Creek in northwestern Cincinnati, with Clifton southeast, Spring Grove Village northeast, and South Cumminsville beyond I-74.
