About Bellaire

Bellaire is a city of houses, above all.

What is Bellaire known for?

It calls itself the City of Homes, and its building lots run 75 by 130 feet, wider than the usual lots in neighbouring West University Place, with room for a house, a detached garage, and a pool. Many streets take tree names, Holly, Maple, and Pine among them. The exception is the I-610 Loop, where high-rise office buildings stand inside the city limits.

What are the main landmarks in Bellaire?

The Henshaw House, on Newcastle, stands inside Bellaire. Evelyn's Park occupies the ground of the Teas Nursery, Bellaire's oldest business and the oldest nursery in Greater Houston, whose property kept two historic buildings. A streetcar acquired in Portugal in 1985 stands on permanent display in Bellaire, a reminder of the line of its early years, and the Bellaire Town Square Family Aquatic Center stands inside the city as well.

What is the history of Bellaire?

Bellaire began in 1908. William Wright Baldwin, president of the South End Land Company, laid it out on part of William Marsh Rice's ranch as a residential neighbourhood and farm trading centre, and named it for its breezes: Bellaire, good air. A streetcar line to Houston's Main Street opened in 1910.

Bellaire incorporated in 1918, which kept it out of Houston, though by the end of 1948 Houston held all the land on its edges. The city stayed independent and adopted a home rule charter in 1949. Its streetcar, nicknamed the Toonerville Trolley, had given way to a bus line in 1927.

The postwar building boom added hundreds of houses a year, and in the 1960s 250 of them were demolished to clear the way for the I-610 Loop, which split the city in two. The Teas Nursery closed in 2010, and its grounds became Evelyn's Park.

Where is Bellaire?

Bellaire lies in southwestern Harris County, Texas, and covers about 9.3 square kilometres. Houston surrounds it, together with West University Place and Southside Place. Interstate 610 bisects the city.

In its early years Bellaire Boulevard and a streetcar line were its links to Houston, and the Bellaire Transit Center stands on the boulevard.
