About Galena Park
What is Galena Park known for?
Galena Park grew up as a refinery town on the Houston Ship Channel. It takes its name from the Galena Signal Oil Company of Texas, which built the first refinery there, and its main road keeps the settlement's old name: it was Clinton until 1935. Traffic to and from the ship channel and the Port of Houston runs along Clinton Drive.
What are the main landmarks in Galena Park?
The Galena Park Branch of the Harris County Public Library opened on Keene Street in December 1996, built as a partnership between the county library and the city. Galena Park High School, inside the city, serves every resident. Our Lady of Fatima School, a Catholic school from prekindergarten to grade 8, is in Galena Park too, and the post office stands on Clinton Drive.
What is the history of Galena Park?
Ezekiel Thomas settled the land that became Galena Park in 1824, on a grant from the Mexican government, and after his death his family sold it to the family of Isaac Batterson, who arrived in 1833. The settlement of Clinton began in 1835, a farming and ranching community on a tract that Batterson bought from the Thomas estate. In the 1880s it became a railroad centre on the new Port of Houston, and when the petrochemical industry arrived in the early 1900s it turned into a refinery town.
A request for a post office in 1935 failed because another Clinton in Texas already held the name, so the town took the name of the Galena Signal Oil Company. Incorporation that year kept it outside Houston. The port's growth carried the city through the late 1930s.
Hard years followed in the 1980s, when cranes replaced the longshoremen who had taken up to a week to unload a ship and the steel mills laid workers off.
