About Highland Park

Highland Park was planned around its parks.

What is Highland Park known for?

When Wilbur David Cook and George E. Kessler laid out the town in 1907, twenty percent of the original land was set aside for parks, and since 1990 Highland Park has held to strict zoning ordinances. Highland Park Village, built in 1931, was the first shopping centre of its kind in the United States, and the Dallas Country Club lies inside the town as well.

What are the main landmarks in Highland Park?

Highland Park Village carries the town's national claim: built in 1931, it was the first shopping centre of its kind in the United States. The Highland Park Town Hall is Spanish Colonial. Lang & Witchell designed it.

Its neighbour, the Highland Park Public Library, opened in 1930 together with an art gallery, later turned into council chambers, and was renovated in 2008. Exall Lake, formed when Henry Exall dammed Turtle Creek, was a picnic spot in the 1890s.

What is the history of Highland Park?

Highland Park's land was bought in 1889 by the Philadelphia Place Land Association, whose agent Henry Exall planned exclusive housing along Turtle Creek. He laid gravel roads and dammed the creek to form Exall Lake. The Panic of 1893 stopped him.

In 1906 John S. Armstrong bought part of the land and named his development Highland Park for the high ground that overlooked downtown Dallas, and in 1907 Wilbur David Cook, who had planned Beverly Hills, and George E. Kessler designed its layout. Armstrong died in 1908, and his widow and his sons-in-law Edgar Flippen and Hugh Prather carried the work on. A petition to Dallas was refused in 1913.

Its townspeople voted to incorporate that November, and incorporation was granted in 1915. The last major land development came in 1924. Dallas tried to annex the town from 1919, a dispute that lasted until 1945 and ended with Dallas annexing the land around it instead.

After the late 1950s Highland Park grew only by building houses on its remaining vacant lots.

University Park lies to the north. Together the two towns form the Park Cities, an enclave within Dallas, and Highland Park covers about 5.7 square kilometres.

What is the climate of Highland Park?
