About Kirby

Kirby is known as the Hobo Capital of Texas.

What is Kirby known for?

The name came from the Southern Pacific railroad that crossed the town and the drifters it brought, and from 2008 the city held a hobo festival each May, with a parade and the crowning of a hobo king and queen, until officials cancelled it in 2019. Kirby is also a major producer of pecans, which grow naturally in its soil and crop between September and November.

What are the main landmarks in Kirby?

Kirby City Hall stands on Bauman Street. The municipal court shares it, and the police department and the new fire station are on Ackerman Road. Two city parks lie along Binz Engleman Road, separated by Ackerman Road, with baseball fields on the western side and a full range of recreation on the eastern.

Rosillo Creek, Kirby's main stream, once watered the farms before running on to Salado Creek.

What is the history of Kirby?

German immigrants founded Kirby as a farming community in the early 1900s and named it after the Kirby yard of the Southern Pacific Railroad that crossed the town. In 1920 it counted about 18 people, most of them farmers, and German was widely spoken. In the 1950s families settled in Kirby to commute to Randolph Air Force Base.

Kirby incorporated in 1955. A drought that began in 1957 lasted two years and broke many farms, so the farmers sold their land to the city, which built homes and roads on it and turned Kirby into a suburb. In 2007 officials took up the old nickname, Hobo Capital of Texas.
