Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Longview splits its beds between the old downtown and the ground out by the interchanges, and the two do not feel like the same city. Downtown keeps the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, First Baptist Church, and the county-seat business of Gregg County inside a few blocks, which suits anyone who would rather walk to an exhibition than drive to one. The streets quieten after office hours.
Rooms are fewer here, and the surviving houses along the older avenues carry more heritage than they do beds, which is the trade a downtown stay makes. The Tracy Flanagan House, the Stuckey House, and the Hurst House belong to that same era of building, and a downtown base is the practical way to find them on foot. The arithmetic reverses out by the highways.
Where Interstate 20 and Highway 80 converge just north of the Sabine River, frontage properties take the through traffic, and a room there trades walkable streets for a fast start the next morning. Highway 259 gives a third option. Beds along that road put Upshur County and the Piney Woods within reach before breakfast, and they suit travellers whose plans point out of the city rather than into it.

What is the history of Longview?
The railway came first. Surveyors working for the Southern Pacific Railroad laid out a townsite in 1871, and they named it for the long view they found from a hill near the centre of the new grid. The name stuck.
A county seat followed, and the freight the railroad brought through gave the young town its first reason to grow beyond the depot. Growth was steady rather than sudden. Longview served the country around it, and the business of Gregg County passed through its yards for decades before anything larger arrived.
Oil changed the scale. When the East Texas Oil Field opened, Longview became one of its headquarters, and the industry that arrived with it turned a railway town into a supply centre for the vast field spreading around it. Petroleum remains a large part of the economy.
The houses those years left behind, the Whaley House and the Northcutt House among them, still stand on the older streets, along with First Baptist Church. Longview also became the commercial anchor of the Piney Woods, drawing trade from Upshur and Rusk counties into a metropolitan area that carries all three county names.
