The Imperial Sugar Company Refinery Historic District fixes one end of the choice. Streets around the old works keep the Sugar Land Auditorium and Casa de Manana within reach, and a room there suits anyone here for the refinery district rather than for the run into Houston. The Lott residence stands nearby.
Fort Bend County keeps its older building stock on that side of the city, well away from the highway frontage. The Texas Prison System Central State Farm Main Building belongs to that older register too. The junction is the other logic.
Texas State Highway 6 and Interstate 69 meet at the centre of the municipality, so rooms near the crossing work for stays that treat Sugar Land as a base for the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Downtown Houston is 19 miles off. That drive is short enough to make the city a practical base and long enough that the refinery district keeps a character of its own, which is the whole of the decision here.

The Texas Prison System Central State Farm Main Building survives from that period, and the Lott residence and Casa de Manana date from the decades when the town still ran on the refinery rather than on commuting. Houston grew out to meet it. The junction of Texas State Highway 6 and Interstate 69 put Sugar Land on the main lines of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area, and the company town became a suburban municipality carrying its own name in the metro title.
The auditorium stayed. Sugar Land Auditorium survives from the civic building of the earlier town, and the refinery district was kept as a historic district rather than cleared for the growth that surrounded it. Fort Bend County grew around all of it.
The city ended as the largest in that county, 19 miles from downtown Houston and still named for the crop that built it.
