What is the history of Assebroek?
Assebroek ran its own affairs until 1971. On 1 January of that year the commune was merged into Brugge, ending a separate administration and turning a village on the city's edge into one of its sub-municipalities. The council went to Brugge; the name stayed put.
Within the Flemish Region and the province of West Flanders, the address still reads Assebroek, while every civic question is settled in Brugge.
