Koolkerke governed itself until 1971. The merger of that year folded it into Brugge along with the other sub-municipalities, closing a run as an independent commune that had given the place its own council, its own church and a boundary drawn round barely four square kilometres. Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaartkerk outlasted the council.
What changed was the paperwork, not the ground: the fields north of Brugge kept the shape they had carried as a commune.
