Dudzele, Brugge — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Dudzele is a polder deelgemeente north of the Brugge city centre, known locally as Dizzêle, with the Sint-Pietersbandenkerk at its centre.

About Dudzele

Where to stay in Dudzele

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

The polder is the setting for any stay in Dudzele, with the Sint-Pietersbandenkerk for a landmark, quiet lanes for streets, and the hotel trade of Brugge left behind in the city centre to the south. De Groene Tente takes no guests. Two churches hold the old parish names, and neither the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Bezoekingskerk nor the Sint-Pietersbandenkerk stands within walking reach of the Brugge city centre.

Choose Dudzele if you want polder quiet and a ride into Brugge each morning.

About Dudzele

What are the main landmarks in Dudzele?

Dudzele's landmark list runs to three entries: the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Bezoekingskerk, the Sint-Pietersbandenkerk and De Groene Tente. Both churches are parish churches, and both stand out in the polder north of the Brugge city centre rather than among the brick lanes that draw visitors into the old town. De Groene Tente closes the list.

The polder holds all three, and the visitor traffic stays south in Brugge.

What is the history of Dudzele?

Dudzele's record reaches back to 801, and for more than a thousand years after that the village stood as a municipality in its own right, answering to no city. That ended on 1 January 1971. Brugge absorbed the polder village that day, and Dudzele has been a deelgemeente of the provincial capital ever since, its old boundaries surviving as a parish and an address inside West-Vlaanderen.

In the polder the name is still said Dizzêle, or Dizèele, a local pronunciation that the merger into Brugge never touched.

Where is Dudzele?

Dudzele covers close to twenty-two square kilometres of polder north of the Brugge city centre, in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
