Sint-Pieters-op-den-Dijk was the older name, worn by a village that stood clear of Brugge and ran its own affairs as a municipality until 1899, when the boundary moved and the parish went to the city. Dikes preceded the parish. The sea reached in over this stretch between Brugge and the coast, and the marsh it left had to be drained and banked before fields could carry a village at all.
