What are the main landmarks in Lissewege?
Two parish churches anchor the sub-municipality. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Bezoekingskerk rises over the village of Lissewege in brick, its blunt tower visible from far across the surrounding fields long before the houses come into view. The Sint-Leo de Grotekerk serves the built-up ground nearer the port at Zeebrugge.
Neither church stands within the old ring of Brugge.
What is the history of Lissewege?
Lissewege governed itself until 1971. On 1 January of that year the municipality was merged into Brugge, and the villages of Zeebrugge and Zwankendamme passed into the same sub-municipality, so that one old parish boundary now accounts for a broad wedge of the city's northern territory. West Flanders lost a commune that day.
The name stayed with the parish and with the sub-municipality that Brugge still administers.
