Male Castle stands at the centre of the old hamlet. Louis, count of Flanders was born inside it in 1329, and the small historic core that survives around the walls is what gives the quarter its shape rather than a market square or a high street. St. Trudo's Abbey holds the other name at Male.
Church dedications run long on this side of Brugge: the parish of Sint-Kruis carries the Heilige-Kruisverheffing-en-Sint-Jozefkerk.
What is the history of Male?
Male Castle gave the hamlet its standing, and the birth of Louis, count of Flanders inside it in 1329 fixes a date on this quarter that most of the outer parts of Brugge cannot match. Absorption followed. The hamlet went into Sint-Kruis, and Sint-Kruis into Brugge, so a place with its own castle answers to a city hall built for somebody else.
St. Trudo's Abbey has held religious ground on the same side of the parish. What the hamlet left is the small historic centre.

Male lies at the eastern end of Sint-Kruis, the Brugge sub-municipality it belongs to in West Flanders, with the castle grounds marking the old hamlet.
