What is the history of Sint-Michiels?
Sint-Michiels became a commune in 1796 under French rule, holding the farmland and hamlets on the ground below the Brugge walls. That arrangement lasted 175 years. On 1 January 1971 the commune was merged into Brugge, and Sint-Michiels has been a sub-municipality of the provincial capital ever since, its old village core reduced to an address rather than a seat of government.
