Heirnis is a place to sleep among terraced houses rather than beside a hotel lobby, and its two quays set the choice. Ferdinand Lousbergskaai runs along the Visserijvaart past the Lousbergsinstituut, with the Ferdinand Lousbergspark just behind it. Vlaamsekaai faces the Schelde. Gent's centre and St Bavo's Cathedral lie a little over a kilometre off, and Gent-Dampoort sits closer still for the trains.
You will want this base if a quiet street matters more than a doorstep in the centre.

What are the main landmarks in Heirnis?
The Sint-Antonius van Paduakerk stands on Forelstraat at the centre of Heirnis, a brick neo-Gothic parish church begun in 1898 and finished in 1900 to plans by Hendrik Geirnaert. Its tower rests on pylons. The Lousbergsinstituut lines Ferdinand Lousbergskaai, built in the 1860s to Adolphe Pauli's design from a cotton fortune left for elderly and disabled workers, and the Ferdinand Lousbergspark opens behind it.
Villa Karel Miry, a half-timbered house of 1895 on Vlaamsekaai, wears terracotta portrait reliefs and a band of lettering. Gent's cathedral and its museums are a walk away in the centre, not on these streets.
What is the history of Heirnis?
Heirnis was wet meadow long before it was streets. The Heirnismeersen, on record from the 14th century, lay in a bend of the Schelde and served as common cow pasture, a grazing right the free households of the Sint-Baafsdorp held until the streets came. The Rietgracht, a 13th-century ditch marking Gent's old jurisdiction, split it into a Grote Heirnis to the west and a Kleine Heirnis to the east.
A railway ran along the Kasteellaan from 1857, and a ring line replaced it in 1876. Forelstraat was cut in 1881, and the Heernislaan came down from the north, its southern stretch waiting until 1892. The Rietgracht was culverted in 1916.
Where is Heirnis?
Heirnis lies east of central Gent, the western half inside the Heernislaan between Kasteellaan and Vlaamsekaai on the Schelde. The eastern half sits in Sint-Amandsberg.
