Rooms are thin on the ground here, and the nearest cluster of hotels sits around Gent-Dampoort station, a little over three kilometres southwest down the Antwerpsesteenweg toward the city core. Houses fill the rest. Book in Oude Bareel if a postwar residential street suits you better than a canal view, since the N70 runs from the Beelbroekstraat corner down to the Dampoort.
Pilgrims head north instead, to Oostakker-Lourdes.

What are the main landmarks in Oude Bareel?
The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk van de Oude Bareel stands on the corner of the Antwerpsesteenweg and the Beelbroekstraat, a yellow-brick parish church that Valentin Vaerwyck designed in 1930 and that has been a protected monument since 2005. Oscar Sinia cut its sculpture. Joep Nicolas signed and dated the choir window 1933, and its fifteen scenes set out heaven, earth, and the afterlife.

What is the history of Oude Bareel?
Farmland held this ground for centuries. The Ferraris map of the 1770s shows a hamlet called Beelbroeckstraete along the line of the Beelbroekstraat, south of the road running east out of Gent toward Antwerpen. Workers for the Gent factories settled along the steenweg through the nineteenth century, and the split of Sint-Amandsberg from Oostakker in 1872 put the ground south of the road into the new commune.
A parish of its own followed on 17 October 1928, awkwardly, because it straddled two municipalities and Oostakker objected. Housing filled the back fields in the second half of the twentieth century.
