Rodenhuize is a working quay on the Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, not a place with rooms. Every bed lies elsewhere. The practical choice is the Gent centre eleven kilometres south, or the village core of Desteldonk, much closer at two kilometres.
Come out here only if your work is on the port of Gent, or if you want to see the Rodenhuizedok and the mouth of the Moervaart for yourself. The R4 carries the port traffic past the quay as the President John F. Kennedylaan.

Rodenhuize keeps what it has on one street, the Rodenhuizekaai. At number 3 the Centrale Rodenhuize raises its cooling tower over the canal bank, a power station that EBES began in 1962 for the SIDMAR steelworks and that burned wood pellets from 2011 until March 2023. At number 1 sits the Brandweercentrum Rodenhuize, a fire station in clinker brick with laminated timber trusses, designed by Jean Van den Bogaerde and opened by the city on 9 May 1987.
Its drying tower hinges the wings together.
What is the history of Rodenhuize?
Rodenhuize carries the name of a red house, set down as the Maison Rouge in 1547 and as Roode Huis on the Atlas der Buurtwegen. A fort stood at the junction of the Moervaart and the Sassevaart, first mentioned in 1485, rebuilt for the War of the Spanish Succession, and gone by 1751; the Ferraris map still drew Fort Rouge Ruiné in the 1770s. On 26 May 1547 Charles V licensed the Sassevaart, dug from Rodenhuize to the sea dike of the Braeckman and finished in 1549.
Widening from 1870 cut away the bend the hamlet stood on. The port took the rest.

Rodenhuize lies on the east bank of the Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, below the Rodenhuizedok and west of the Moervaart mouth, two kilometres north of Desteldonk.
