Sint-Kruis-Winkel puts almost nothing under its own roof, so the choice runs between the lanes off Sint-Kruis-Winkeldorp and the hotel streets around Korenmarkt in Gent, some 14 km south. Winkelwarande has no hotel. Sleep out here if you want the Moervaartvallei footpath at first light and the Heilig Kruiskerk tower in view above the fields.
Central Gent suits anyone after museums, restaurants and late trains.

Sint-Kruis-Winkel keeps two protected monuments. The Heilig Kruiskerk at Sint-Kruis-Winkeldorp 67 is a three-aisled hall church of brick and sandstone whose square west tower dates from the fifteenth century, and it has carried monument protection since 1936. A walled kerkhof fills the plot behind it.
Along Winkelwarande stands the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Troost ter Warandekapel, rebuilt in 1635 and enlarged in neo-baroque form in 1863. Niches in its side walls hold the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary.
What is the history of Sint-Kruis-Winkel?
Sint-Kruis-Winkel appears in the records of 1150 as Wincle, a word for corner, and the parish grew out of heath reclaimed by Cistercian monks within the Asseneder Ambacht. Philip IV of Spain granted the heerlijkheid to the Della Faille family in 1649. Jan Francies Della Faille, mayor of Gent, bought a small castle in the village in 1716; port works later swallowed it.
Gent took a first slice in 1927. The rest followed in the municipal merger of 1965.
