The old village is the walkable part. Richmond Street, Centre Street West and Elizabeth Street North still carry the houses that make the heritage register worth a morning, and the Richmond Hill Heritage Centre sits close enough to start from. Rooms there are scarce.
What the old core offers is a short walk past the Cyrus Mapes House, the George Monkman House and Richmond Hill United Church rather than a choice of hotels, so most beds lie elsewhere in the city. Most of the hotel stock faces the neighbours. Richmond Hill runs into Markham on one side and Vaughan on the other, with Thornhill to the south and Aurora to the north, and the larger places to stay cluster along those edges where the road traffic of York Region passes.
That makes a car close to essential. Business visitors take those rooms for the Greater Toronto Area rather than for Richmond Hill itself, and the drive to downtown Toronto is short enough that the city works as a base for both. Headford United Church and the William Cooper House stay out of that traffic entirely.

The village dates itself to 1873. Family names carry the record from there, and the register of kept addresses reads as a roll of the people who built the place, with the Cyrus Mapes House, the David Bridgeford House, the George Monkman House and the Matthew McNair House all still standing. Farms lay between them.
Braeburn Farm and the house known as Willow Grove show how far the countryside reached before the suburb closed over it. Toronto did the rest. Richmond Hill grew into a city inside the Regional Municipality of York, one of a chain of municipalities north of Toronto that filled in as the Greater Toronto Area spread outward.
Markham and Vaughan grew the same way. Thornhill to the south and Aurora to the north mark the ends of that belt, and Richmond Hill holds the middle of it with its older streets preserved in patches rather than as a whole. Growth arrived from every side at once, since Markham, Vaughan and Thornhill were filling in over the same decades and left Richmond Hill enclosed rather than isolated.

Richmond Hill sits in the middle of York Region. The city occupies a block of ground between Markham and Vaughan, with Thornhill along one edge and Aurora beyond the other, so its boundaries are drawn against neighbours rather than against any coast or range. Toronto lies to the south.
Nothing much interrupts the ground in between, which is why the built-up belt runs unbroken from the downtown core up through Richmond Hill and on into the rest of the Greater Toronto Area.
