Daoli District holds the tourist core of Harbin, and most beds sit along or just off Central Street. The 1,450 metres of granite cobbles between Jingwei Street and the Harbin Flood Control Memorial Tower put Saint Sophia Cathedral, Zhaolin Park, and the Songhua River embankment within an easy walk of the old quarter. Zhongyang Street station serves that stretch.
Further west, the Qunli subdistrict spreads newer housing around the Qunli National Urban Wetland Park, well back from the river-front crowds. Stay in the old core if you want the ice lanterns on foot, or in Qunli for space and quiet.

What are the main landmarks in Daoli District?
Central Street runs 1,450 metres of granite cobbles from Jingwei Street north to the Songhua River, its facades carrying the Renaissance and Baroque styles of Harbin's Russian decades. Saint Sophia Cathedral stands about 600 metres east, its onion dome rising 53.35 metres since the brick rebuild of 1932. Zhaolin Park opened in 1906.
The park took the name of the resistance general Li Zhaolin in 1946 and held the first Harbin ice lantern fair in 1963. The Harbin Flood Control Memorial Tower closes the north end of the cobbles, and the Harbin Old Synagogue Concert Hall stands on Tongjiang Street.
What is the history of Daoli District?
Daoli District takes its name from the Chinese Eastern Railway, which reached Harbin in 1898 and split the settlement into land inside the tracks and land outside them. Russian and Jewish merchants raised wharves, shops, and synagogues on the Songhua River bank west of the line. Butou was the Manchukuo name.
The Modern Hotel went up on Central Street in 1906, both of the city's synagogues stand in the district, and the Harbin Museum of Jewish History and Culture on Jingwei Street holds the record of that community; the name Daoli returned in 1946.
Where is Daoli District?
Daoli District lies on the south bank of the Songhua River, bounded east by the Binzhou Railway and Daowai District and running south-west to Shuangcheng District.
