Nangang District covers the walkable core of central Harbin, and both Gogol Street and Dazhi Street run through it along the ridge that named the district. Hongbo Square faces the station. A room at that end leaves Harbin Railway Station, whose south hall opens onto Tielu Street, a few minutes away on foot, while Haxi New District, built around the Harbin West Railway Station that opened in December 2012, sits about 8 km southwest.

What are the main landmarks in Nangang District?
Nangang District's landmarks line Dongdazhi Street. Jile Temple sits at number 9, a Buddhist complex begun in 1921 and finished in 1924 across 53,500 square metres. At 268 the Church of the Intercession takes its Byzantine form from Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, facing the Gothic Sacred Heart Cathedral at 211 across the road.
St. Alexius Church marks the corner of Gogol Street and Shike Street. The Heilongjiang Provincial Museum occupies the former Moscow Bazaar at 50 Hongjun Street, the Harbin Confucian Temple stands on Wenmiao Street inside Harbin Engineering University, and the Dragon Tower rises 336 metres above Changjiang Road.
What is the history of Nangang District?
Nangang District was called Qinjiagang, the Qin family's ridge, until the Chinese Eastern Railway reached the crest in 1898 and a street market formed along it. Russian engineers set the railway administration there in 1899 and had a timber cathedral standing by December 1900 on the central square that became Hongbo Square. St. Nicholas Cathedral fell in 1966.
Harbin Special City absorbed Nangang on 17 April 1926, the Manchukuo authorities made it a formal district on 1 July 1938, and Majia District was folded into it in October 1949.
Where is Nangang District?
Nangang District covers central and western Harbin, split from Daoli District by the Beijing-Harbin Railway and from Shuangcheng District by the Yunliang River.
