Shuangcheng District covers Harbin's southwestern farm plain, far enough from the built city that most visitors keep their room in Harbin proper. What lodging the district holds gathers in the old fort town, where Chengxu Gate marks the east side of the Qing grid. Shuangchengbao railway station sits 2.5 km out.
It stands on the Beijing-Harbin railway, while the Harbin-Dalian high-speed line calls instead at Shuangcheng North railway station, about 7 km northwest of the old town. You would come out here for the fort town, not for Harbin.

What are the main landmarks in Shuangcheng District?
Shuangcheng District's landmarks are three listed buildings rather than a skyline, and Chengxu Gate, the Qing east gate of the old walled town, is the first of them. On Changsheng Street the Northeast Democratic United Army front headquarters occupies a house built in 1917 for a Jilin police official, and the command post worked there from 1946 until September 1948. The State Council listed it for national protection in 2013.
Shuangchengbao railway station completes the three. Its waiting hall is registered as Qing architecture in its own right, 2.5 km out along the Beijing-Harbin railway.
What is the history of Shuangcheng District?
Shuangcheng District takes its name from the ruins of two Jin-dynasty forts, Dahezhai and Budazhai. Fujun, a Mongol bannerman who had just taken office as Jilin general, walled the site in 1814. The fort became one of the Manchu heartlands, and an old saying paired the two ends of that country: the Liaoyang prefecture in the south, Shuangchengbao in the north.
Manchu ethnic townships survive across the district. Shuangcheng was a subprefecture by 1880, a prefecture in 1909 and a county from 1913, became a county-level city in 1988, and was made a district of Harbin on 15 May 2014.
Where is Shuangcheng District?
Shuangcheng District fills the plain between the Lalin River, its boundary with Jilin, and the Songhua River to the northwest. Acheng District adjoins it on the east.
