What are the main landmarks in Daowai District?

Daowai District's oldest landmarks stand in the grid of numbered streets off Jingyu Street. Chinese Baroque Street fills the blocks between Jingyu Street and Nanxun Street, where merchant houses raised European facades over Chinese courtyards, worked peonies into the cameo carving, and put dougong brackets on the columns. The Daowai Mosque went up in 1897.

At 18 Beisidao Street the old Bank of Communications Harbin Branch carries the Corinthian portico Zhuang Jun designed, a neoclassical front raised between 1928 and 1930. The Harbin Ice Hockey Arena covers four rinks at 22 Baqu Street.

What is the history of Daowai District?

Daowai District began as Fujiadian, the Chinese quarter that grew beyond the ground the Chinese Eastern Railway held. The Jilin General won approval for Binjiang Subprefecture on 23 January 1907, and its first magistrate raised the seal at Fujiadian that April and set the office on South Eleventh Street. Plague reached Fujiadian on 7 November 1910.

Wu Lien-teh directed the response from there through the Manchurian plague. Manchukuo split Fujiadian into two districts in 1938, Heilongjiang rejoined them as Daowai District on 28 August 1956, and Taiping District was folded in during February 2004.

Where is Daowai District?

Daowai District runs east from the Binzhou Railway to Bin County, with the Songhua River and Hulan District along its north. Tianheng Mountain rises in the east.
