What is the history of Changzhou?
The canal made the town. When the Grand Canal was cut through the delta, Changzhou rose as a station on the water, a town of merchants and boats between the great cities. Silk and grain moved through.
For centuries the barges carried the silk, the grain, and the salt of the delta down the canal, and the town grew rich on the trade. Scholars and craftsmen filled the town. Changzhou bred poets and painters, and its workshops turned out the fine bamboo combs that carried its name across China.
Mills came in our own age. In modern times factories and a great dinosaur park rose at the town, and Changzhou grew as a city of the delta, keeping its canal, its combs, and its pagoda. The old canal still runs through.

Changzhou lies in the south of Jiangsu in China, on the Grand Canal. The city sits on the flat green plain of the Yangtze delta, on the old canal between the great river and Lake Tai, in a land of water towns and paddy, with the delta stretching away on every side and the Yangtze running north of the town.
