The Yangtze waterfront sets the pattern for beds in Jiangyin. Rooms cluster where the port business is, which suits the freight and factory traffic that keeps a county-level city under Wuxi busy, and a visitor arriving on company time will find the choice widest there. Xingguo Temple Pagoda, Shiyuan Garden and the former residence of Xu Xiake are why a leisure traveller comes to Jiangyin at all, and a bed chosen near them turns a day of driving into a day of walking. Jiangyin covers roughly 987 square kilometres. That is enough ground for the address to matter, because the city belongs to the Jiangyin-Zhangjiagang-Jingjiang metropolitan area and its edges reach out toward Zhangjiagang and Jingjiang rather than stopping at a compact centre.
Check the map before booking. A room chosen for the Jiangyin Museum is not automatically a room near the Site of Huangshan Battery or the Shecheng Site, and the two ends of the city make different days. Wuxi absorbs the overflow.
Jiangyin is administered from the prefecture-level city of Wuxi, which gives anyone shut out of the local stock a much larger pool inside the same administrative frame.

What is the history of Jiangyin?
Two archaeological sites push Jiangyin's story back before any charter. The Shecheng Site and the Gaochengdun Site are both listed, and between them they establish that the southern bank of the lower Yangtze River here was occupied long before the county-level city took its present shape. Its own start date went unrecorded.
What the register holds instead is a sequence of places, each standing for a period the written account does not supply. Administration settled later, with Jiangyin becoming a county-level city under the prefecture-level city of Wuxi in Jiangsu province. The river brought defence with it.
The Site of Huangshan Battery marks a point where the Yangtze River had to be held, and a battery is only built where a channel is worth contesting. Two houses carry names. The former residence of Xu Xiake and the Former Residence of Wu Tinglu preserve individual lives in a way the earthwork sites cannot, and the Jiangyin Museum gathers the loose ends of both kinds of record.
Silk had its turn. The Jiangyin Silkworm Farm is listed among the city's heritage, which puts an industry into the same register as Xingguo Temple Pagoda and Shiyuan Garden.
