What is the history of Wuxi?
Wuxi is one of the old cities of the delta. Its name means without tin, from the mines that ran dry in ancient days, and it grew as a walled town on the Grand Canal, a market for the rice and silk of the rich delta. The canal made it a trading town.
Boats carried grain and cloth north and south along the great waterway, and merchants and weavers filled its lanes. Learning flourished here as well. The Donglin Academy of Wuxi became famous in the Ming days, when its scholars spoke out against the court and paid for it with their lives.
Then mills and machines came. In the last century Wuxi grew into one of the first factory cities of the land, spinning silk and cotton by the lake, and later a city of gardens and industry both. The old gardens still stand by the water.

Where is Wuxi?
Wuxi lies on the northern shore of Lake Tai in southern Jiangsu, eastern China. The city sits on the flat delta plain of the Yangtze, threaded by the Grand Canal and countless creeks, between the great lake and the river, west of Shanghai. Low hills rise by the lake.

What is the climate of Wuxi?
Wuxi has a humid subtropical climate. Hot, wet summers and cool, damp winters cross the delta, and the monsoon brings heavy rain in the warm months, with a mild spring and a long, misty autumn. Fog rises off the lake in the cold season.

How do you get to Wuxi?
Wuxi lies in southern Jiangsu, between Shanghai and Nanjing. Fast trains on the main line run to it from Shanghai and Nanjing in under an hour, and an airport serves the city, while the Grand Canal and the lake carry boats. Buses reach the delta towns around.
