Three urban districts make up the built-up part of Taizhou, and that is where the rooms are. A prefecture this size spreads its listed sites across a lot of ground, so the first question is whether a stay belongs in the urban core or out where Xinghua Duotian and the Site of the Huangqiao Battle sit. The core wins for most trips.
Rishe Garden, the Taizhou Museum and the Taizhou City God Temple are the sights a central room is chosen for, and putting them in one day is the argument for staying in the urban districts at all. Xinghua Duotian is the reason to break the pattern. A stay out there answers to a different part of the prefecture, and a traveller who books the urban core and then drives out has spent the better part of a morning getting to it.
Memorial ground is scattered too. The Site of the Huangqiao Battle and the hall marking the birthplace of the Chinese People's Navy are spread across the prefecture, so an itinerary built around them wants the map open before the booking is made. Yangzhou and Nantong are within reach.

What is Taizhou known for?
Taizhou keeps Rishe Garden, the Xuezheng Examination Hall and the Taizhou City God Temple inside a prefecture that also holds the Memorial Hall for Taizhou School of Thought, so its reputation rests on ideas as much as on buildings. Water lies to the south. Nantong, Yancheng and Yangzhou take the other three sides, which leaves the city facing the Yangtze River rather than another neighbour.

The Tianmushan Site and the Jiangzhuang Site cover ground rather than architecture, while the Taizhou Meilanfang Memorial Hall and the Memorial Hall for Taizhou School of Thought hold people rather than stones.
What is the history of Taizhou?
Taizhou's oldest record is in the ground. The Tianmushan Site and the Jiangzhuang Site are both listed, which places settlement on the north bank of the Yangtze River long before any of the halls or gardens a visitor sees. Taizhou's founding date never got written down.
The register instead runs from those sites through the Xuezheng Examination Hall and the Taizhou City God Temple, each standing for a period the written account leaves blank. Ideas got their own monument. The Memorial Hall for Taizhou School of Thought commemorates a school of thinking that carries the city's name, which is a rarer kind of heritage than a garden or a temple.
Conflict left its mark. The Site of the Huangqiao Battle records fighting inside the prefecture, and the memorial hall for the birthplace of the Chinese People's Navy records a founding that took place on this stretch of the Yangtze River. One name has its own hall.
The Taizhou Meilanfang Memorial Hall keeps one name in view, Rishe Garden and the Shangchizhai Medicine Store hold the civil life around it, and the Taizhou Museum assembles the sequence for anyone who wants it in order.
Where is Taizhou?
The Yangtze River holds the southern edge. Taizhou occupies the north bank in Jiangsu, with Nantong to the east, Yancheng to the north and Yangzhou to the west, so three neighbours enclose the prefecture and the river closes it. Three urban districts form the built-up part.
The rest is prefecture, wide enough that Xinghua Duotian and the urban core belong to different days.
What is the climate of Taizhou?
The Yangtze River is the nearest large influence. Taizhou lies along its north bank in the subtropical band, and a prefecture set against a river of that width takes its air from the water rather than from anything the interior of Jiangsu supplies. Damp air rarely lets up.
Anyone moving between Taizhou and Yancheng or Yangzhou will find no sharp break in conditions, since the three occupy the same stretch of the province.
How do you get to Taizhou?
Roads come in from three neighbours. Nantong to the east, Yancheng to the north and Yangzhou to the west all border Taizhou directly, so an overland approach is a matter of which side of Jiangsu the traveller starts on. The river is the fourth side.
The Yangtze River runs along the prefecture's southern limit, and the three urban districts are where arrivals converge before anything else in Taizhou is reached.
