The customs house came first. An old Zollhaus marks the line that once separated the Fürstentum Ansbach from the Reichsstadt Nürnberg, and the Zollhauspark beside it keeps both its Saalbau and the terrace that came with the Gaststätte. The Passionskirche and Zum Guten Hirten serve the housing built around them.

Langwasser was drawn from scratch in the 1960s as a prototype of the satellite town concept, a planned residential quarter laid out on the southeastern flank of Nuremberg. The name is older. It belongs to the small stream along the eastern edge, which carried the word Langwasser long before any of the housing did.
Older still is the Zollhaus that once watched the boundary between the Fürstentum Ansbach and the Reichsstadt Nürnberg.
