What are the main landmarks in Breitenfeld?

The Breitenfeld Monument is the anchor here, standing on the plain where the 1631 battle was fought and later commemorated. Two churches serve the neighbouring villages. The Gustav-Adolf-Kirche Lindenthal honours the Swedish king who won that day, while the Kirche Wiederitzsch marks the older settlement to the east.

A line of protected houses along Lindenthaler Hauptstraße preserves the village street, and the Phyllodrom rainforest museum adds live insects and tropical plants a short way off.

What is the history of Breitenfeld?

Breitenfeld earned its place in European history on 17 September 1631, when the Swedish army of Gustavus Adolphus met the Catholic League forces under Count Tilly here. The Swedes won decisively. That victory proved a turning point of the Thirty Years' War, and a second battle followed on the same plain in 1642.

For generations afterward the site stayed farmland north of Leipzig, and the Breitenfeld Monument and Gustav-Adolf-Kirche Lindenthal were later raised to keep the memory of the Swedish king. The village was in time absorbed into greater Leipzig beside Lindenthal and Wiederitzsch.
