Grünau is a large residential estate, so base yourself in central Leipzig and come out to its shops and its leisure pool. The centre of the estate is the area around the Lützner Straße and the Stuttgarter Allee. The PEP shopping centre opened in 1995.
In 1996 the Allee-Center followed, with a multiplex cinema beside it, and the Grünauer Welle leisure pool opened in 1999.

About Grünau
What are the main landmarks in Grünau?
Grünau has three churches. The Lutheran Pauluskirche, finished in 1983, keeps the 15th-century Dorfkirche Schönau as an outpost, and the Catholic St. Martin was finished in 1985. West German churches helped to pay for both new buildings.
The K4, opened in 2001, is the largest outdoor climbing wall in Leipzig, and the Völkerfreundschaft, a cultural house from 1983, has been an open leisure centre since 1993.
What is the history of Grünau?
The estate rose on open land at the edge of Leipzig, along the old road to Lützen. A design competition ran from May to November 1973, and the plan under Horst Siegel set out thirty-six thousand flats for up to a hundred thousand people. The foundation stone was laid on 1 June 1976.
Building ended in 1988. After 1990 Grünau lost more than half its population by 2010, and thousands of flats were demolished.

Grünau meets the Kulkwitzer See to the south-west, with Markranstädt beyond it, Miltitz to the north, Neulindenau to the east and Großzschocher's fields to the south.
