Grünau is a large prefabricated housing estate on the western side of Leipzig, built as a socialist new town from the mid-1970s. Its rows of concrete-panel blocks, laid out in numbered residential complexes, once made it one of the biggest estates of its kind in East Germany. Grünau keeps few monuments of its own. Its sights are mostly churches inherited from the villages the estate absorbed, from Kirche Schönau in the Schönau quarter to the cemetery and church Miltitz out on the western edge. The older surrounding quarters add the Taborkirche, the Liebfrauenkirche and the Pauluskirche.
Two museums draw enthusiasts: the Museumsfeldbahn Leipzig-Lindenau with its narrow-gauge trains, and the Da Capo Oldtimermuseum & Eventhalle with its vintage cars.
What is the history of Grünau?
For centuries the land here was farmland, worked from villages like Schönau and Miltitz on the western approach to Leipzig. Miltitz earned an industrial name through essential oils, produced at the works of the fragrance house Schimmel & Co. The estate that named the district came later, laid out from 1976 as the German Democratic Republic raised block after block of prefabricated flats.
Its scale was vast. Grünau became one of the largest socialist new towns in the east. After reunification many families left, and whole rows were pulled down or cut back in height.
Where is Grünau?
The estate occupies the far west of Leipzig, in the city's Stadtbezirk West, spreading across former farmland toward the Saxon countryside. Older village cores ring it. Schönau lies to the south, Lindenau and its workshops to the east, and Miltitz out on the western fringe.
The Kulkwitzer See, a flooded lignite pit, forms the western boundary, and the S-Bahn calls at the railway station Leipzig-Miltitz.
