What are the main landmarks in Plagwitz?
Plagwitz wears its industrial past as culture. Old works house the Museum für Druckkunst, where historic presses still run, and the Da Capo Oldtimermuseum & Eventhalle keeps a collection of vintage cars under one roof. What is the history of Plagwitz?
Plagwitz started as a village by the Weiße Elster. Everything changed in the mid-nineteenth century. The Leipzig lawyer and entrepreneur Karl Heine bought up the surrounding land, drained the wet meadows, and from the 1850s had the Karl-Heine-Kanal dug so barges could reach the new factory plots he was selling.
Machine works and printing houses soon lined the water, and the booming suburb was absorbed into Leipzig in 1891. When heavy industry later receded, artists and museums moved into the emptied halls.
Where is Plagwitz?
Plagwitz occupies part of western Leipzig, hemmed by the Weiße Elster and its floodplain to the east, with Schleußig on the far bank. Lindenau adjoins it to the north, Kleinzschocher to the south. Its spine is Karl-Heine-Straße. From the river the Karl-Heine-Kanal threads northwest through the quarter toward the old harbour at Lindenau, tracing the line along which the district's factories were once laid out.
