What are the main landmarks in Gohlis?
Gohlis's own landmark is the Schillerhaus, the small farmhouse turned museum where the poet spent the summer of 1785. On the quarter's southern flank, the Leipzig Zoological Garden ranks among the busiest attractions in the city. Everything else waits a short way south, in the centre.

What is the history of Gohlis?
Gohlis grew up as a farming village on the flat land north of Leipzig, long before the city reached it. Its place in German letters was fixed in the summer of 1785, when Friedrich Schiller lodged in a Gohlis farmhouse and drafted the "Ode to Joy". That cottage survives as the Schillerhaus.
As Leipzig expanded outward in the nineteenth century, the village was drawn into the growing city, and rows of tall apartment houses replaced its fields. The old rural core and the newer tenement streets still read side by side.
Where is Gohlis?
Gohlis lies due north of Leipzig's historic centre. The ground climbs gently away from the old town, and the streets fill with the tall apartment rows of the district's building boom. Along its southern side stretches the Rosental, a broad meadow-and-woodland park that buffers the quarter from the inner city.
The Leipzig Zoological Garden holds the parkland's eastern corner. Eutritzsch borders Gohlis on the east.
