The district's monuments belong mostly to the fighting of October 1813. The Apel-stones mark troop positions across the old battlefield, while the Gedenkstein zur Völkerschlacht 1813 and the Russisch-Preußisches Denkmal stand for the armies that clashed here. Liebertwolkwitz was established in or before 1040. For centuries it stayed a farming village on the Galgenberg, the highest ground in the whole Leipzig area. Its name entered military history in October 1813, when a massive cavalry engagement swept across its fields on the eve of the Battle of the Nations.
Memorials still dot the settlement. The Russisch-Preußisches Denkmal records the armies that met here, while the old cemetery Liebertwolkwitz keeps the village's quieter past.
