What are the main landmarks in Stötteritz?

In Stötteritz, the Marienkirche stands on raised ground where the oldest village core is thought to lie. Its square is a protected monument. Das Wäldchen, a park, began as an English-style garden laid out after 1790 on the lower estate, and on the old road to Connewitz the Napoleonstein marks where the Quandt tobacco mill was built in 1734.

Stötteritz also holds the Königin-Luise-Haus, the Mitspielzeugmuseum and the water tower that takes its name from Probstheida.

What is the history of Stötteritz?

Stötteritz began as an Old Sorbian village after 700, and its name comes from the Sorbian stodor, stony ground. It appears as Sthodericz in 1325. Tobacco was the main living for many villagers from 1765 to 1860, and in autumn the houses hung with drying leaves.

Friedrich Schiller stayed here in 1785, and the poet Christian Felix Weiße, who bought the lower estate in 1790, drew Wieland and Jean Paul to it. On 17 October 1813 Napoleon moved his headquarters to Stötteritz, and the Marienkirche served as a field hospital. The village governed itself from 1839 and joined Leipzig in 1910.

Stötteritz lies about four kilometres from central Leipzig, between the Prager Straße to the west, the Ostfriedhof to the north and Probstheida to the south.
