Hervanta keeps its own set of buildings. The Hervannan kirkko anchors the centre, a concrete church at the core of the planned town, with the small Hervannan Katukappeli nearby for everyday worship. Sport and museums fill out the rest.

The Hervannan jäähalli draws skaters through the long winter, while the Poliisimuseo, the national police museum, gathers visitors from across Tampere to this suburb south of the city. There is no old quarter here, so the appeal of Hervanta lies in its self-contained plan rather than monuments stacked along ancient streets.

Hervanta was built as a town from scratch. Tampere laid it out as a planned satellite south of the centre, a dense district of apartment blocks set apart from the older city and meant to house thousands at once. The plan came first, then the people.

Streets, the Hervannan kirkko and the suburb's shopping core were drawn together as a single scheme on the ground next to Hallila and Vuores, and a university campus followed to anchor the new town. That campus shaped what Hervanta became, drawing students and technology firms that still give this corner of Tampere its character.

Hervanta lies in south-eastern Tampere in south-western Finland, a planned satellite town some ten kilometres south of the city centre, set next to Hallila and Vuores around the Hervannan kirkko.
